Who is Adnan Syed?

Adnan Syed is a man who has been imprisoned for the death of Hae Min Lee, his ex girlfriend and classmate at Woodlawn High School on the outskirts of Baltimore, MD. Through the efforts of a family friend, Rabia Chaudry, his case was brought to the attention of a journalist named Sarah Koenig. Koenig works for This American Life, a longtime running program on NPR. This American Life and Sarah Koenig took 15 years worth of case notes, over 40 hours of telephone interviews and their own determination to find the truth and turned it into Serial, a podcast that has since shattered records for most downloaded podcast of all time, revolutionizing the way we look at media and our criminal justice system forever.

Why is this important to you, reader? Well, soon after listening to the podcast and doing a little work of my own, I discovered that I believe Adnan. He has always maintained his innocence. That means the state of MD has had an innocent man incarcerated for 15 years for something he had no involvement in. As you peel back the layers of this crime, you find that there are more questions than answers: Why did the detectives zero in on Adnan? Why did this young man get convicted with so little more than circumstantial evidence? How easily could this have happened to any of us? The most important question: who killed Hae Min Lee?
